Troglodyte battle

USD 4.40

A simple melee creature with no special damaging abilities if not properly run can a bland encounter make. Don't let your encounter with these loathsome creatures be dull, do everything you can to make the experience colourful to the max. Describe what the players see, but not only that: describe the smell of the troglodyte lair, a rotting mass of blood, and gore, and bones, and dung; describe the dank atmosphere, the sense that there are diseases to be caught here; better still, add a layer of sound.

With Syrinscape, you'll be able to foreshadow the (probably inevitable) battle with deep cavernous rumbles and distant disturbing rattles, and squelches, and scratches, plus a suspenseful music soundtrack that'll have the players wanting to bring on the encounter simply to get out of a place of impending filth and violence.

Literally surprise your players with a sudden screech from these peculiar beast and battle is on. Trigger more growls, and add in specific sounds for bite or claw attacks, and you'll really be building an encounter that is no longer just a series of numbers slowly descending to zero, but instead an experience the players (and characters) will never want to repeat! ...well, unless there are experience points on offer, of course!

From the Monster Manual:
The savage, degenerate troglodytes squat in the shallow depths of the Underdark in a constant state of war against their neighbours and one another. They mark the borders of their territories with cracked bones and skulls, or with pictographs painted in blood or dung.

Perhaps the most loathsome of all humanoids, troglodytes eat anything they can stomach. They dwell in filth. The walls of their cavern homes are smeared with grime, oily secretions, and the debris of their foul feasting.
